- Main article: Pangaea
Gondwana, originally Gondwanaland, is the name given to a southern precursor-supercontinent (final ongoing joining occurred between ca. 570-510 Ma, joining East Gondwana to West Gondwana) and then as a remnant separated from Laurasia 180-200 Ma during the breakup of the Pangaea supercontinent that existed about 500 to 200 Ma ago into two large segments. The name of the supercontinent Gondwanaland comes from the Gondwana region of Odisha. It was named Gondwanaland because some of its primary stone formations were first investigated in western Odisha and at that time western Odisha was not an independent region, it was under the Gondwana region(Reference-McEldowney, Philip F.
